How to Sew a Skirt: Easy Beginner PDF Sewing Patterns

A skirt is one of the most satisfying garments to make as a beginner. It's wearable, quick to sew, and teaches you techniques you'll use over and over in garment making. Here's everything you need to know to sew your first skirt.

The Easiest Skirt Styles for Beginners

Elastic-Waist Skirt

Start here. An elastic waist means no zip and no precise fitting — the elastic takes care of it. You'll sew side seams, create a waistband casing, thread elastic, and finish a hem. Four skills in one project.

Gathered Skirt

A gathered skirt (also called a full or ruffle skirt) uses a strip of fabric gathered onto a waistband. The gathering technique is one you'll use constantly in sewing — great to learn early. The full silhouette hides any small imperfections in the gathers.

A-Line Skirt

An A-line skirt is shaped — it has a fitted waist and flares gently to the hem. Slightly more advanced than an elastic waist, but still very manageable as a second or third project. You'll learn to work with shaped pattern pieces and a zip or button closure.

Wrap Skirt

Like a wrap dress, a wrap skirt has no zip — it ties at the waist. Usually just two or three pattern pieces, with a clean finish and a very flattering silhouette.

What You'll Need

  • A PDF skirt pattern
  • 1–2 metres of fabric (depending on the style and length)
  • Matching thread, fabric scissors, pins, and a sewing machine
  • Elastic (for elastic-waist styles) or a zip and button (for fitted styles)

Choosing Your Fabric

For your first skirt, choose a fabric that's easy to handle:

  • Cotton — crisp, easy to press, great for A-line and gathered styles
  • Linen — beautiful for summer skirts, slightly more relaxed handle
  • Viscose/rayon — soft and drapey, ideal for gathered and wrap styles (slippery to cut, so use sharp scissors and pins

Step-by-Step: Sewing an Elastic-Waist Skirt

  1. Print and assemble your pattern — see our guide: How to Read a PDF Sewing Pattern
  2. Cut your fabric pieces — typically a front and back panel
  3. Sew the side seams with right sides together, press open
  4. Sew the waistband casing — fold the top edge down and stitch, leaving a gap to thread the elastic
  5. Thread the elastic through the casing, overlap the ends and stitch them together, close the gap
  6. Hem the skirt — fold twice, press, and topstitch
