Step 1: Stitch the short edge
With right side facing, fold the fabric in half along the short edge. Using a 1 cm seam, sew the side opposite the fold closed.

Step 2: Sew two rows of loose stitches at one end

  • Set your sewing machine to the longest stitch length possible sew two rows of stitches.
  • Start sewing the first row at about 6 mm from the edge. Do not backstitch at the beginning and end and leave long thread tails.
  • Sew the second row of stitches at about 6 mm below the first row again leaving long thread tails at both ends.
  • Hold one set of thread tails from each row (top and bottom) and gently slide the fabric along the threads. As you do this, the fabric will gather and bunch up and close the opening. Stitch the opening closed.

Step 3: Stuff the pumpkin

  • Turn the fabric right side out, and begin to stuff the pumpkin
  • Start filling the pumpkin shape with your choice of stuffing material. You can use polyester fiberfill, cotton batting, or any other suitable stuffing material.
  • Do not stuff it completely. Leave some extra fabric at the top to create the pumpkin's tail. The amount you leave unstuffed will determine the size and shape of the tail, so adjust it to your preference.
  • Gather the excess fabric at the top of the pumpkin and tie it tightly with twine making sure to leave enough twine on both ends to wrap it up around the fabric and shape the tail of the pumpkin.

Step 4: Make the tail

  • Roll the twine around the tail fabric, working your way up to the end of the tail. Make sure to also bring the other end of the twine up while twisting the other end.
  • Once you've wrapped the twine around the entire tail, tie the two loose ends of the twine together securely. This will hold the twisted fabric in place and give your pumpkin its distinctive tail shape.

Step 5 Create the pumpkin segments
Thread the needle with embroidery thread and start creating the pleats by threading the needle through the bottom of the pumpkin and up through the top. Pull the thread over the side of the pumpkin, pulling it tight and down to the bottom to repeat for another 4- 6 pleats, according to your preference.
Note: Ensure that you are keeping the thread tightly pulled while continuing to thread from the bottom to top. If you do not pull tightly enough, it will result in a loose thread, without a pleating effect.)
After finishing making the segments, make a knot of the bottom of the pumpkin.

  • Create the pleats
  • Make a knot of the bottom of the pumpkin
